Beef Tallow for Eczema-Prone Skin: Benefits and What to Expect

If you have been struggling with dry, irritated, or eczema-prone skin, you’ve likely tried countless creams and lotions—often with mixed results.

Recently, many people have started turning to a more traditional option: beef tallow.

But where does it actually fit when it comes to caring for eczema-prone skin? And what should you realistically expect?

Our Story

Mom and I began making beef tallow skincare a good year before launching our business, Ode to Tallow. Although we had been making skincare using other butters for several years, it took us a while to find halal and grass-fed beef tallow here in Canada.

My mom remembered her grandparents using beef and sheep tallow for cooking and skincare–but that was simply from leading a no-waste lifestyle. When we began trying out tallow moisturizers for the family, it was born from a similar desire–how do we use all aspects of the animal in an effort to reduce waste and honour the wisdoms within traditional practices.

It wasn’t until months later that we first heard about its connection to eczema.

When we began gifting our halal and grass fed tallow butters to friends, one particular friend used the butter on her daughter’s eczema without us even knowing.

A few weeks passed and my mom received an emotional text from her.

Asma, please consider turning your skincare into a business. I used your cream on my daughter’s eczema and it’s significantly reduced. Her legs are smooth! We have no halal beef tallow businesses here which use grassfed and grassfinished beef tallow–the community needs this. (paraphrased)

A month later, Ode to Tallow was born. 2 years since then, we have had countless customers write to us about how much our grass fed beef tallow butters and soaps have helped their eczema.

Let’s explore this a little further.

What Is Beef Tallow (and Why Are People Using It on Skin)?

Beef tallow is a rendered form of fat, traditionally used in cooking and skincare. Suet (derived from kidney fat) is what we render our beef tallow from. It is much more nutrient dense than trim fat.

What makes it unique is that its composition is bio-similar to the skin. Tallow contains a profile of fatty acids—such as oleic acid and stearic acid—that are similar to those naturally found in our skin barrier.

Because of this, many people find that tallow-based products feel deeply nourishing and supportive, especially for dry or sensitive skin types. In fact, the majority of our customers are those with highly sensitive skin. You can read more about their experiences in our review page.

Understanding Eczema-Prone Skin

Naturopath, Dr. Jennifer Luis defines eczema as “general term for a group of conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed, itchy, and red” She, and numerous other health practitioners discuss the root causes of eczema, which can be linked to gut imbalances, hormonal disruptions, food sensitivities, deficiencies, immune system dysregulations (auto-immune links) and more.

At a symptomatic level, eczema-prone skin is often deals with:

  • Dryness and flaking

  • Painful, itchy flares

  • Leathery, patchy marks

  • Sensitivity to ingredients which can cause a burning sensation

  • A weakened skin barrier

While experiences vary from person to person, many conventional products rely on harmful synthetic ingredients that often cause more harm than good.

According to the experience of our customers, many natural products may not irritate the skin, but don’t help much.

Why So Many are Choosing Beef Tallow for Eczema-Prone Skin

While tallow is not a medical treatment or a root-cause cure, it is often chosen for its supportive properties. Many of our customers who use our All Natural Butter or Tallow-Beeswax Butter describe the relief they find. They have discussed finding relief from itching, burning, and noticed the softening of visibly scaly/scarred patches.

Why is this?

1. Our Halal and Grassfed Tallow is Rich in Skin-Compatible Nutrients

Tallow naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which are commonly associated with skin nourishment.

2. Beef Tallow Helps Support the Skin Barrier

A well-functioning skin barrier helps retain moisture and protect against environmental stressors. The fatty acid profile of fully grass fed beef tallow, including stearic, oleic, and palmitic acids helps support our skin barrier better than many natural products.

3. Minimal Ingredients

We keep all our products as minimal as possible. In fact, our most popular butter (All Natural Butter) and soap (Unscented Homesteader’s Soap) for eczema-affected skin only have three ingredients each!

4. Deep Moisture Without Synthetic Fillers

Unlike some lotions that rely heavily on water and preservatives, our tallow-based butters are 90-95% tallow and contain no fragrance oils, preservatives, or fillers.

5) Grass fed Beef Tallow Contains Anti-Inflammatory Properties:

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in beef tallow have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe irritated skin and reduce redness.

What to Expect When Using Our Tallow Butters on Eczema-Prone Skin

Everyone’s skin is different, but here are some common experiences our customers have reported:

  • Skin may feel more moisturized and less tight

  • Dry patches may appear softer over time

  • A small amount goes a long way, especially when applied to damp skin

  • Texture may feel richer and more hydrating than conventional creams

  • Our customers have described noticing our tallow butters and soaps reduce their itching, burning, and flaking. Read about their experiences here

We always recommend doing a patch test when trying out a new product.

How to Use Our Tallow as a Moisturizer

If you’re considering trying any of our beef tallow products:

  1. Start with a small amount

  2. Apply to slightly damp skin (after washing)

  3. Focus on dry or sensitive areas

  4. Use consistently as part of your routine

Because tallow is so concentrated, a little goes a long way!

Choosing a High-Quality Tallow Product

Not all tallow is the same. The reason it took Mom and I so long to start making tallow skincare is because we did not want to skimp on quality.

  • Hand Slaughtered Halal, sourced from a small Muslim Family Farm in Ontario

  • Grass-fed, Grass-finished, Hormone & Antibiotic Free.

  • Minimal, Organic Ingredients

  • Ethically Raised & Pasture Raised Animals

These factors allow our products to be nutrient dense, clean, and highly compatible with our skin & values.

Final Thoughts

Beef tallow is a traditional skincare ingredient that many people are rediscovering—especially those looking for simple, nourishing options for dry or eczema-prone skin.

While it’s not a medical treatment, it may offer a supportive approach to moisturizing and strengthening the skin barrier.

As with any skincare product, consistency and quality matter—and finding what works best for your skin is always a personal process. We recommend trying our sample sets or bundles to explore a variety of product types. For highlight sensitive skin, it’s best to stick to our essential oil-free products, such as our All Natural Butter, Tallow-Beeswax Butter, and Unscented Homesteader’s Soap.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is beef tallow safe for eczema-prone skin?

Beef tallow is often used as a moisturizer for dry and sensitive skin. Individual responses can vary, so it’s best to patch test and monitor how your skin reacts. We recommend starting with our unscented butters and soaps which are most popular amongst our eczema-prone customers.

2) Can tallow replace my regular moisturizer?

Many people choose to use tallow as their primary moisturizer due to its richness and simplicity. Our halal and grassfed beef tallow butters work well as a daily moisturizer for both the face and body.

3) Why do people prefer tallow over conventional creams?

Many people are drawn to tallow because of its minimal ingredients and traditional use, especially if they are trying to avoid synthetic additives. Grassfed tallow is also nutrient dense, and has been shown to help with a number of common skin concerns, including eczema, acne, acne scarring, dryness, redness, and more.

4) How often should I apply tallow?

This depends on your skin’s needs, but many people apply it once or twice daily. Our tallow soaps can be used throughout the day, and the butters are especially nice on damp skin.

5) Is all tallow the same?

No—quality can vary widely. Factors like sourcing (grass-fed vs. grain-fed) and processing methods can affect the final product. We make sure to source tallow from cows that are hand-slaughtered halal, grass-fed and grass-finished, hormone & antibiotic free, and pasture raised.

6) Does tallow clog pores?

Tallow generally does not clog pores due to its similarity to our natural skin sebum. However individual skin type and preference plays a role, so it’s best to test and adjust accordingly.
