Is Beef Tallow Skincare Ethical and Cruelty Free?
Eight years ago, my mom and I began our journey into clean skincare. Like many people trying to move away from conventional products, we experimented with everything we could find: cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, essential oils, carrier oils—you name it. We were searching for something simple, natural, and truly nourishing for the skin.
Then, a few years in, we stumbled upon tallow.
It came through a random YouTube video from a homesteader who raised her own cows and used tallow to make everything from body butters & balms to soaps & candles. Mom instantly remembered how her own grandmother used to use beef and goat tallow in her village back home in Pakistan.
We quickly began searching for halal, grass-fed, ethically sourced tallow. Months later, God opened the doors and we found a local halal & grass-fed shop close to home. We scooped out some tallow, and began experimenting with recipes for our family.
The response was incredible!
Before I go into how tallow transformed our skin, I want to touch base on a common question we receive regularly: Is tallow skincare cruelty-free and ethical?, AND how we navigate it in the way we source beef & sheep suet for our tallow skincare business.
Understanding the Concern: Tallow Is Animal-Based
The biggest concern people raise about tallow is simple: it comes from animals.
For those used to plant-based skincare, using an animal ingredient can initially feel uncomfortable. Given how commercial meats are sourced, many people question if our tallow is sourced ethically or not.
Something extremely important to Mom and I, as practicing Muslims, is making sure our natural skincare line is both Halal AND Tayyib.
Understanding What Halal & Tayyib Means
In Islam, our standard for what we consume—and what we put on our bodies—is not only halal, but also tayyib. The Qur’an tells us, “Oh, you people, eat from the earth what is halal and tayyib” (Surat al-Baqarah 2:168)
We apply this to skincare as well, because
What you apply to your skin is absorbed into our body & bloodstream, so we want to make sure the tallow our business is of the highest, purest quality
We are conscious of what our money supports, and we want it to support local businesses who are conscious of how they treat their animals and doing so in an Islamically compliant way.
Halal means “permissible” and Tayyib means “wholesome, pure, and ethically good.”
There are a number of guidelines to follow during the animal’s life and at the time of slaughter to ensure it is as merciful and ethical as possible.
We get our Beef and Sheep Suet (which we render into tallow) from a Local, Muslim-Owned Small Farm which ensures their animals are
Raised outdoors in open pasture
Grass-fed and grass-finished
Free from hormones and antibiotics
Hand-slaughtered according to halal guidelines
These conditions matter deeply. Ethical skincare isn’t just about the ingredient itself—it’s about the entire process behind it.
Tallow Supports Nose-To-Tail, No-Waste Living
Something important to acknowledge is our tallow is not taken from animals specifically for skincare. It is a by-product of the food system, rendered from the fat of cattle that are already being raised for its meat.
This actually connects to an important traditional principle: nose-to-tail living.
Historically, wasting parts of an animal has always been considered disrespectful, especially in Islamic communities. Every part had value—from meat and bones to fat, hide, and organs. Tallow is simply the rendered form of that fat, transformed into a nourishing ingredient instead of being discarded.
From this perspective, using tallow can actually be seen as reducing waste and honoring the life of the animal.
Our Unexpected Discovery: The Many Benefits of Tallow Skincare
When we first started making tallow skincare for the family, we weren’t even thinking about the benefits of using beef tallow people now talk about online. We actually began months before tallow went viral!
But as we shared our products with family and friends, we began receiving incredible feedback.
Friends started messaging us about how the products were helping their skin in ways we hadn’t anticipated.
One friend noticed relief from persistent dry, flaky skin.
Another told us her daughter’s eczema and psoriasis were improving! She was actually the one who encouraged us to turn this into a business, because halal & grassfed tallow skincare in our local area didn’t really exist!
Even my own skin changed. I struggled with very dry hands, ‘chicken skin’ (Keratosis pilaris) on arms & legs, and an oily T-Zone. With regular use of our tallow butters, my skin became plum & hydrated, our tallow soaps helped my “chicken skin” (keratosis pilaris) on my arms began fading. In terms of my T-Zone, tallow actually helps balance oil production, so my oil production levelled out remarkably.
Today, we continue seeing similar results with many of our customers.
One customer shared this beautiful testimonial:
“Alhamdulillāh, I've been benefiting from your products for a few years now. From ridding my son's eczema, to keeping my body from flaking from winter showers, to miraculously healing my daughter's burst lip just after a few applications of your soothing lip balm. All your products are made with ihsan and itqan and make my heart sing.”
Another customer dealing with topical steroid withdrawal wrote:
“I can't express how grateful I am for your products! I'm working with a naturopath for root cause healing, but your All Natural Tallow Butter and soap have been so helpful for my skin. My son also has eczema and your Tallow has made such a difference.”
Stories like these continue to remind us why we started.
Common Concerns About Tallow Skincare
1. “Doesn’t Tallow clog pores and cause acne?”
This is a common concern, especially among people with acne-prone skin.
In our experience, the opposite has often been true. Due to Tallow being bio-similar to our skin’s natural oils, it often absorbs easily and doesn’t sit heavy on the skin.
Many customers struggling with acne find relief with our frankincense tallow butter or our charcoal and turmeric tallow soap, which we designed specifically for acne-prone skin.
2. “Does our tallow smell like meat?”
Another common question!
Properly rendered, high-quality grass-fed tallow rarely has a strong smell.
We also make sure to add a small amount of natural ingredients like:
Organic Cocoa Butter or Beeswax (in our unscented products)
Wildcrafted Floral infusions
Carefully selected essential oils
These additions get rid of any lingering beef-y scent while keeping our formulas simple and natural.
So, Is Tallow Skincare Cruelty-Free and Ethical?
It’s important to acknowledge that well before plant-based skincare became common, animal fats have always been used for skincare. Before industrial beauty products existed, Tallow was commonly used in balms, soaps, and moisturizers.
In many ways, the return to tallow is part of a larger movement back toward ancestral living—choosing simple, whole ingredients instead of highly processed formulations.
Tallow is also a way to support nose-to-tail, no-waste living where all parts of the animal are honoured.
We take pains to source our tallow from animals that are:
raised ethically
treated humanely
slaughtered according to halal principles
For us, tallow skincare represents something beautiful: a return to simplicity, stewardship, and gratitude for the resources Allah has placed on this earth.
And after seeing the impact it has had on our own skin, our family, and our customers, it’s hard to imagine our skincare routine without it!
